Animal Crossing storage shed: How to unlock the storage shed and how it works in New Horizons

Empty those pockets.

There is now an Animal Crossing storage shed available thanks to New Horizon's 2.0 update.

As you're exploring your island, there's never a shortage of items to pick up. Sadly, your pockets don't have infinite room to carry everything at once, which ends up limiting your trips as you inevitably end up returning home to drop items there. But a new addition may be just the thing you need.

This page explains how to unlock the storage shed in the Animal Crossing: New Horizons, as well as how the storage shed works so you can prep accordingly before obtaining one.

How to unlock the storage shed in Animal Crossing New Horizons

The storage shed is a new item that allows you to access your home storage remotely. It will rapidly become a vital waypoint to either free up your inventory or take any needed items without the need to backtrack all the way to your house.

In order to unlock the storage shed in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, you must have first fully upgraded your house, then paid an additional 500,000 bells to expand your storage further.

RIP your bank balance.

Once done, you should receive some mail the next day about being able to purchase a storage shed using Nook Miles. Visit the Town Hall then check the Nook Stop.

From here, there are two storage sheds available - a Wooden Storage Shed (from a DIY recipe, available immediately for 6,000 Bells) and a wider Storage Shed (also available for 6,000 Bells, but arrives in the mail the next day).

The wooden storage shed in particular requires 30x wood, hardwood, softwood and 10x iron nuggets to craft.

The Animal Crossing 2.0 update and Happy Home Paradise is here! We can help you with the new additions - including where to find Brewster, Gyroids, new villagers, ordinances, new fences, storage shed, new hairstyles, Froggy Chair, group stretching and Kapp'n boat tours. Cooking is now unlockable, so you need to know how to make both flour and sugar, as well as how to grow carrots, potatoes and tomatoes. Meanwhile, if you're new to Animal Crossing, our New Horizons tips can help with the basics. From the off, there's fish and bugs to catch, flowers and fruit to grow with. One long term goal is building your Happy Home Academy score. Finally, you need tools such as the new ladder and vaulting pole to fully explore.

How the storage shed works in Animal Crossing New Horizons explained

The storage shed can be placed anywhere in the island, which makes for an essential tool that you should definitely pursue as soon as possible.

Once you've found the desired spot, go ahead and place it. (Don't worry, you can pick it up and move it again later as you would any other item!) Then, you'll see two prompts when interacting with it: put something away and get something out.

The first allows you to, well, store items that are in your character's pockets. As long as you have room in your home storage, you can place them there.

You're right, keeping a rice cooker on a beach is a silly idea.

The second does the opposite: you can take any of the items out of the storage for, say, a quick crafting session or just to grab an extra shovel. It makes for a rather helpful shortcut all around, and specific uses will vary depending on your situation and needs.

Finally, as with most other inventory items, you are free to customise the appearance at a workbench.

That's all! Enjoy your new flexible storage options.
