Special research update for Halloween in Pokémon Go

In keeping with the spirit of Halloween, the Misunderstood Mischief special research quest will be updated twice during the final event of October.

The first update arrives at the beginning of the Halloween event on Friday, 15th October, while the second set of challenges will be released on Friday, 22nd October at 10am (local time). You can learn more about these new challenges in our Misunderstood Mischief guide.

According to the official Pokémon Go blog, there will be two more updates to this quest in November - the last month of the Season of Mischief - though these events are, at the time of writing, unannounced.

'Halloween Cup Research' quest steps and rewards in Pokémon Go

Below you'll find every quest step and reward for the Halloween timed research quest in Pokémon Go.

Since this quest has a deadline, you must complete it before the event ends if you wish to earn all of its rewards. It will, thankfully, be available throughout the Halloween event, so you will have enough time to complete it.

Be wary - the section below does contain spoilers! Even if you want to avoid spoilers, however, we recommend visiting our Halloween Cup guide before embarking on this quest.

Field research tasks for the Halloween event in Pokémon Go

During this year's Halloween event in Pokémon Go, you'll be able to collect a number of exclusive research tasks by spinning PokéStops. Like all research tasks, these can be saved and completed at a later date, but, once the event ends, you won't be able to receive these tasks anymore.

It's important to note that the Halloween event field research tasks changed at 10am (local time) on Friday, 22nd October with the start of the second half of the Halloween event, Ghoulish Pals.

Here are the Halloween field research tasks in Pokémon Go:

  • Catch 5 Ghost-type Pokémon reward - Costume Pikachu or Costume Piplup encounter

Everything else you need to know about Halloween in Pokémon Go

Pokémon Go's Halloween event this year has been divided into two different parts - Creepy Companions and Ghoulish Pals - with the switch happening roughly halfway through the event.

Each part of the Halloween event will have its own set of new releases, event field research tasks, 7km egg pool, raid lineup and different Pokémon appearing more frequently in the wild.

Despite this, you will receive double candy from catching, hatching and transferring Pokémon throughout the Halloween Cup Research event. As well as receiving Candy XL from walking with your chosen buddy Pokémon.

You can complete both the What Lies Behind the Mask special research quest, which will remain available after the event, and the dedicated Halloween timed research quest throughout both halves of the event. The Halloween Cup is also running throughout the Halloween event, giving you an extra Go Battle League challenge.

The new costume Pokémon, called the Halloween Mischief Pokémon, are appearing through a variety of means during the whole Halloween event.

Finally, the event closes with a raid weekend - from Saturday, 30th October at 10am (local time) to Sunday, 31st October at 8pm (local time) - where you'll be able to battle Mega Absol and Darkrai.

Ghoulish Pals - Friday, 22nd October to Sunday, 31st October

The Halloween spirit has truly arrived during the second half of the spookiest event of the year with the release of four new Gen 6 Pokémon.

Phantump and Pumpkaboo, along with their evolutions Trevenant and Gourgeist, have made their Pokémon Go debut. There's even a special Pumpkaboo Collection Challenge, which tasks you with catching all of the different Pumpkaboo sizes!

Phantump and Pumpkaboo will be released during the second half of the Halloween event.

Both Phantump and Pumpkaboo are appearing in the wild, alongside:

  • Halloween Mischief Pikachu
  • Gastly
  • Haunter
  • Murkrow
  • Misdreavus
  • Shuppet
  • Halloween Mischief Piplup
  • Purrloin
  • Yamask
  • Litwick

You can even battle Phantump and Pumpkaboo in one-star raids, alongside Yamask, Galarian Yamask and Murkrow, so it's easy to add these new Pokémon to your Kalos Pokédex.

Alolan Marowak, Banette and Lampent are joining Halloween Mischief Drifblim in three-star raids. Meanwhile, Darkrai, which knows the charged attack Sludge Bomb, are in five-star raids and you can battle the newly released Mega Absol in mega raids.

The 7km egg pool has changed one final time to include the following Pokémon:

Tier One:

  • Spinarak
  • Misdreavus
  • Shuppet
  • Litwick
  • Phantump

Tier Two:

Misdreavus, Litwick and Galarian Yamask can be hatched from 7km eggs.

Don't forgot - shiny Spinarak was released at the beginning of this event!

Creepy Companions - Friday 15th, October to Friday, 22nd October

This year's Halloween event began with the release of Galarian Slowking. You can now evolve a Galarian Slowpoke into every Slowpoke Galarian variant!

Throughout the first half of the event, you were able to fight a number of Pokémon in raids - from Murkrow in one-star raids to Giratina - and any 7km eggs you collected had a different egg pool, including Pokémon like Chingling and Galarian Yamask.

Finally, there was a host of ghostly Pokémon appearing more frequently in the wild exclusively during this first week, including Woobat and Gothita.

Exclusive costume Pokémon for Halloween in Pokémon Go

It wouldn't be a Pokémon Go Halloween event if there weren't any new costume Pokémon.

This year both Piplup and Drifblim are joining in on the fun; the little penguin is sporting a pumpkin style hat, while the ghost-type is wearing a Halloween themed boater. Pikachu is, of course, returning - this time with a bow tie and small top hat.

Both Halloween Mischief Pikachu and Piplup will be appearing in the wild and obtainable through specific field research tasks throughout the Halloween event.

Halloween Mischief Drifblim, however, will be appearing in three-star raids and as one of the Go Battle League rewards. It will be available from field research tasks, but only during the first half of the Halloween event, so, if you want to use this method, make sure you collect the right task!

You may even find yourself encountering a shiny version of these Pokémon.

Currently live is the Fashion Week event, and along with it the debut of Mareanie and Toxapex. Recently, we've seen the arrival of Season of Light and special research quest A Cosmic Companion. Elsewhere, be sure to use Daily Adventure Incense for the chance of encountering Galarian Articuno, Galarian Zapdos and Galarian Moltres. There's also a new special research quest - A Mysterious Incense. Finally - don't forget about the new Prime Gaming rewards every fortnight.

Date and times for the Halloween event in Pokémon Go

This year's Halloween event in Pokémon Go is running from Friday, 15th October to Sunday, 31st October - ending at 8pm (local time).

The event itself is split into two halves; each one has different Pokémon appearing in the wild and raids, alongside the release of new Pokémon, such as Phantump which is arriving in the second half.

The first part of the Halloween event - entitled Creepy Companions - is running from Friday, 15th October to Friday, 22nd October. It will end at 10am (local time) at which point the second part of the event - Ghoulish Pals - will begin and run till the event finishes on Halloween itself.

Remember - while the special research quest What Lies Behind the Mask will be available after the Halloween event ends, the 'Halloween Cup Research' timed research quest will not. This means, if you want the rewards, you need to complete it before the event ends!

Have a grand spooky time during Pokémon Go's Halloween event!
