Proper widescreen for PS2 Resi 4

Cube owners may cry here.

The PlayStation 2 version of Resident Evil 4, due out in Europe on November 4th, will feature proper a 16:9 widescreen mode where the GameCube version merely had an enforced letterbox at 4:3 that could be zoomed on proper widescreen tellys.

That's according to a report on IGN, which also states that the game will feature progressive scan support like its Cube sibling (although whether this will apply in Europe remains to be seen) and that Dolby Pro-Logic II surround sound will be there complement the experience.

IGN also talks of a new weapon, the PRL 412 (Parasite Removal Laser), which is used for sheering off the pesky Plaga - although nobody's sure whereabouts it's likely to be hidden in the game.

If true, the news of a proper widescreen mode in Resi 4 is tremendous news for PS2 owners but is likely to grate slightly with Cube followers, who had been lead to conclude that it was pretty much all that was possible on the hardware. Nope!
