Rocket League publishes loot crate drop rates for first time

Key figures.

Nearly two years after adding crates and keys to Rocket League, developer Psyonix has published the rarity levels found within them for the first time.

Every crate released so far has followed these same rarity percentages, Psyonix said in a new blog posted last night.

Rare items, somewhat contradictrily, account for 55 per cent of drops. The rarest tiers are exotic (four per cent) and black market (one per cent).

  1. Rare Item: 55%
  2. Very Rare Item: 28%
  3. Import Item: 12%
  4. Exotic Item: 4%
  5. Black Market Item: 1%
  6. Chance of receiving Painted attribute: 25%
  7. Chance of receiving Certified attribute: 25%

Pysonix said it was revealing these numbers now ahead of the game's upcoming Rocket Pass and progression system changes. Rocket Pass is the game's new Fortnite-style progression system due later this summer which will offer paid and free variants.

Rocket League crates reveal their contents via a spinning wheel system - although its contents are decided the moment you open one.

But only crate keys are available in the premium pass (and not crates themselves). Additionally, you won't get crates in the game's fresh progression system either.

Not that this transparency should be a bad thing - quite the opposite, and especially at a time when crates - or loot boxes - have become a thorny subject for games. Increased scrutiny has been placed upon them amidst accusations they amount to gambling. Both Belgium and the Netherlands have thrown down legal warnings against them, and Valve has blocked the sale of some loot boxes within these countries accordingly.

Eurogamer revealed last month that FIFA will disclose FUT pack odds for the first time this year, too.
