SteamWorld Dig is heading to PC and Mac in HD

The next SteamWorld game will still launch on 3DS.

The formerly 3DS eShop-exclusive adventure SteamWorld Dig is heading to PC and Mac via Steam on 5th December, Swedish developer Image & Form has announced.

Unlike the 3DS original, this will be an enhanced version with HD graphics. "SteamWorld Dig now plays at 60 frames per second in full HD," noted lead designer Olle Håkansson. "We have added many nifty features such as achievements, bloom filters and cloud saves, but put our main focus into making the experience feel custom-tailored for the desktop... and it looks and feels marvelous."

Image & Form CEO Brjann Sigurgeirsson was adamant that even though SteamWorld Dig is spreading out from the eShop, a sequel will one day launch on 3DS. "Nintendo has treated us like royalty, and the Nintendo community is fantastic. We would be very foolish to turn our backs on them," he said. "As with SteamWorld Dig, our next SteamWorld game will appear on the 3DS day one."

Regarding this mysterious sequel, Sigurgeirsson told Rock, Paper, Shotgun, "The next game in the SteamWorld series will NOT be a direct sequel to SteamWorld Dig - it will not be a SWD2, we'll save that one for a while. The gameplay of the next game will be similar... and, at the same time, quite different."

SteamWorld Dig's Steam release will go for £6.99 / €8.99 / $9.99, and the developer noted that there will likely be a launch sale for it.

EG-contributor Chris Schilling called the game "one of the best 3DS downloads to date," in his SteamWorld Dig review from August.
