Third FF13 game Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13 for PS3, Xbox 360 next year

Will conclude what's now called a trilogy.

Square Enix has announced Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13, the third and final chapter in the FF13 Lightning Saga, due for release on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 next year.

The new world of Navus Partus is divided into four islands.

Final Fantasy 13's pink-haired heroine Lightning will be the main character, after taking a back seat in this year's Final Fantasy 13-2.

Set 300 years later, Lightning awakes to find the world greatly changed, and humanity just thirteen days days from destruction.

The story will centre on the Doomsday Clock, a device that measures the short time humanity has left. The clock will count down to the game's finale (although it is unclear if, as in The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, the game will have some form of real-time mechanic).

Extra time can be added as the game progresses, while Lightning will also be able to perform time-based battle moves that drain the clock.

Lightning Return's battle system has also been spruced up. Fighting mechanics will be a hybrid of previous games, with some real-time elements. You'll also be able to customise your characters more, with looks and combat styles reflected in battle.

Square Enix had previously teased a third Final Fantasy 13 game, amid uncertainty over the status of mysterious action RPG Final Fantasy Versus 13.
