Just weeks from launch, PopCap delays Plants vs. Zombies 2

Release date uprooted until "late summer".

This news passed us by yesterday but we thought it was still worth mentioning: PopCap has repotted its release date for the long-awaited Plants vs. Zombies 2: It's About Time, less than three weeks from its intended release.

The free-to-play follow-up will now launch "later in the summer", PopCap announced via its Twitter account.

"We're sorry for the delay, but want to make sure the game lives up to fans' expectations," PopCap continued. "Stay tuned for more details."

Plants vs. Zombies 2 had been due for release for iOS devices on 18th July, with more platforms to follow. Before that it was set for a vague "first-half of 2013" launch.

PopCap's sequel will uproot the strategy game's urban setting and see you time-travelling to meet pirates, visit Ancient Egypt and survive the Wild West. It also includes a new art style and "all-new touch-screen power-ups that enable players to 'break the fourth wall'," - meaning you can now jab your fingers at the touchscreen to kill zombies directly.

EA announced console offshoot Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare at E3, a new third-person multiplayer shooter for Xbox One and Xbox 360.
