How to get to the Haunted Forest and all new Masks in this year's Festival of the Lost event.

Destiny's Festival of the Lost returns in 2020, bringing a taste of Halloween to the Tower and beyond.

The familiar features are back - including the Haunted Forest activity where you can complete unique bounties, as well as new Triumphs and rewards.

And yes, Festival of the Lost Masks return - with some new additions to add to your collection.

On this page:

The event debuted alongside the finale of the season's on-going Interference quest line.

How to start Destiny 2's Festival of the Lost and Haunted Forest location explained

Destiny 2's Festival of the Lost 2020 runs between October 6th and November 3rd, starting and ending at the usual weekly reset time.

To participate in Festival of the Lost, you need to have access to the Tower social space, and be 770 Power level.

From there, visit Eva Levante in the Tower. Complete the opening quest, which involves chat to Spider in the Tangled Shore and complete the steps that follow - including completing either a Strike, Gambit or Crucible match - and you'll have access to the Festival of the Lost activity, the Haunted Forest, and the chance to start earning rewards.

You can launch this from the Director screen (within the Tower) and from the Tower itself, at the blue console to the right of Eva.

Destiny 2 Festival of the Lost 2020 masks list

A key attraction in Festival of the Lost each year is acquiring masks. These are ornaments which are equipped onto the Masquerader's Helmet which can be purchased from Eva Levante for a small quantity of Glimmer.

The Masquerader's Helmet is modelled on the Master Rahool Mask from previous years.

Masks are sourced by:

  • Purchased from Eva Levante for Chocolate Strange Coins
  • Opening chests in the Haunted Forest
  • Opening the Mystery Bags from Eva Levante (unconfirmed)

When wearing a Mask, you will earn Candy and Chocolate Strange Coins from defeating enemies, completing activities and bounties. Similar to how you would equip the Solstice armour during the Solstice of Heroes event, it's best to keep the Mask equipped for the duration to make sure you're getting drops!

As with previous events, Masks are based on well-known characters and bosses. New Masks are released every year, as well as several returning from previous years.

If you have kept a Mask from a previous year, then you are welcome to wear it during the latest Festival of the Lost event - so be sure to hang onto them!

You need a Cipher Decoder each time you open a chest - a new currency discussed in the following section:

How to get open Haunted Forest chests in Destiny 2

Replacing Fragmented Souls and other currencies from previous years, Festival of the Lost 2020 has you source Cipher Decoders to in order to open chests during Haunted Forest runs.

Once you have visited Spider during the event, Cipher Decoders will be rewarded from activity completions across the solar system, as well as being a random world drop.

Similar to Solstice Key Fragments, these drop from everywhere - so play how you'd usually play, and you'll soon amass a collection to take with you into the Haunted Forest activity.

However, on the event's launch, the drop rate is seemingly lower than anticipated. Our dedicated Cipher Decoder page explains this in more detail, as well as the best methods available to you currently.

You can hold up to a maximum of 25 Cipher Decoders at once - from there, you need to open some chests in the Haunted Forest before you can collect more.

Destiny 2 Festival of the Lost 2020 mods
