Pokémon Go Jirachi quest steps - every step in A Thousand-Year Slumber

Jirachi is waking up in Pokémon Go.

Jirachi is the fourth Mythical Pokémon to arrive, or in Jirachi's case wake up, in Pokémon Go.

Like Mew, Celebi and Meltan before it, Jirachi is available through a Special Research quest line. This has players completing a series of objectives as they follow the story of Jirachi's reawakening.

Jirachi, much like Celebi in 2018, made its first debut at the 2019 Go Fest in Chicago. It was released worldwide alongside the Ultra Bonuses for 2019.

How Jirachi quest 'A Thousand-Year Slumber' works in Pokémon Go

Research Quests, which allow you to complete objectives for rewards, were introduced into Pokémon Go in March 2018.

Pokemon_Go_Tasks

There are two types of Research Quests - Field Research and Special Research. Unlike Field Research tasks, which include a range of challenges and can be completed whenever a player likes, Special Research tasks are the same for every player and have a set, story driven, order.

A Thousand-Year Slumber is the fourth in Pokémon Go's series of Special Research quest lines dedicated to Mythical Pokémon. The previous three being for Mew, Celebi and Meltan.

Just how these previous quest lines brought you to a mythical Pokémon, A Thousand-Year Slumber sees you assisting Professor Willow in his investigation into one of the Mythical Pokémon from the Hoenn region - Jirachi.

The quest is broken down into seven steps, which each consist of three individual challenges. You'll be rewarded for every individual challenge and overall step you complete. Eventually, once you have completed all the steps, you'll be given the opportunity to catch Jirachi.

There is no restriction on when you can complete A Thousand-Year Slumber, so visit the Research tab to start waking Jirachi up.

How Jirachi first debuted in Pokémon Go

Much like Celebi before it, Jirachi was originally only available at the 2019 Go Fests held around the world.

Jirachi made its first appearance at the 2019 Go Fest in Chicago, from June 13th 2019 to June 16th. Attendees were able to catch the Mythical Pokémon after completing a Go-Fest exclusive Special Research questline.

This involved completing a variety of different tasks, some of which were:

  • Making three new friends
  • Catch three Unown
  • Taking snapshots of various caught creatures in different habitats across Go Fest
  • Trading three creatures caught from over 100 km away

Once these tasks were completed, attendees were able to add Jirachi to their Pokédex.

Jirachi was released worldwide alongside the Ultra Bonuses for 2019.

The first Gen 5 Pokémon have arrived! These include new regional exclusive Pokémon, Egg charts, and the introduction of the Unova Stone. Elsewhere this year we've also seen new Adventure Sync rewards, a Jirachi quest, Team Rocket Invasions and freeing Shadow Pokémon, as well as monthly Field Research rewards. Complete the Looming in the Shadows special research quest line to fight against the invading Team Go Rocket Leaders and Giovanni! Finally, Niantic Wayfarer has been released worldwide.

Jirachi stats and everything else you need to know about Jirachi in Pokémon Go

Pokemon_Go_Jirachi

Jirachi is the fourth Mythical Pokemon to appear in Pokémon Go through Special Research task questline. It's also the second Mythical Pokémon from the Hoenn region; the other being Deoxys, which is currently only available via EX Raids.

Like most Mythical Pokemon, Jirachi acquired in the main game series through real-world giveaways and online events.

Jirachi is a Steel and Psychic Type Pokémon. This makes it weak to Ground, Ghost, Fire and Dark Pokémon. Despite its rarity, Jarchi has underwhelming stats, meaning it's true worth comes from the satisfaction of seeing its Pokédex entry being filled. Especially since Mythical Pokémon can't be traded in Pokémon Go.

Jirachi's design was inspired by the superstition of 'wishing upon a star.' The turquoise paper tags that hang from its head are a reference to tanzaku, which are the paper slips people write wishes on during Tanabata. In 2016, 2017 and 2018, Jirachi could be downloaded during Tanabata.

There are more Mythical Pokémon to come, since every generation has its own Mythical Pokémon. Gen 4 has slowly been released into Pokémon Go through 2018 and 2019, so we wouldn't be surprised to see its Mythical Pokémon - Manaphy, Phione, Darkrai, Shaymin, Arceus - appearing on our mobile screens soon.
