Sam Raimi to direct WOW film

You know, him who did Spider-Man.

Sam Raimi has signed up to direct the movie based on stupidly popular MMO World of Warcraft.

"At its core, Warcraft is a fantastic, action-packed story," he said in a press release. "I am thrilled to work with such a dynamite production team to bring this project to the big screen."

Raimi directed all three Spider-Man films. He also wrote and directed The Evil Dead and Drag Me to Hell.

The WOW film will be co-produced by Charles Roven, whose previous credits include 12 Monkeys, Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Other chaps involved include Chris Metzen, Blizzard's senior vice president of creative development, and Legendary Pictures CEO Thomas Tull.

"Sam’s passion for Warcraft is undeniable and we know that he will create an incredible film worthy of Blizzard’s phenomenal franchise," said Tull.

Paul Sams, chief operating wizard at Blizzard, added, "Blizzard Entertainment and Legendary Pictures have a shared vision for this film and we searched at length to find the very best director to bring that vision to life.

"From our first conversation with Sam, we could tell he was the perfect choice. Sam knows how to simultaneously satisfy the enthusiasts and the mainstream audience that might be experiencing that content for the first time. We’re looking forward to working with him to achieve that here."

The movie will be funded by Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. There's no word on who's in it, when it's out or what it's about, but it's probably safe to speculate elves, orcs and ratpunching will be involved.
