Mass Effect: Andromeda's protagonist name finally confirmed

Ticket to Ryder.

Mass Effect: Andromeda's protagonist finally has a name: Ryder.

Like Commander Shepard, Ryder is a surname which will fit for either male or female versions of the character. And you'll be able to customise your first name, too.

Mass Effect producer Michael Gamble confirmed the name via Twitter, along with an image of the female human character seen at the end of yesterday's EA E3 press conference video.

Separately, after the press conference, BioWare exec Aaron Flynn confirmed to Eurogamer that the character was indeed the default female form of Andromeda's protagonist.

It's actually not the first time we've seen the name Ryder within Mass Effect: Andromeda. Last autumn's N7 Day teaser featured a blink-and-you-miss-it dogtag emblazoned with the Ryder name.

At the time, fans speculated this could be the name for the new main character. It fitted, fans said, because Ryder was likely a reference to the first American woman in space, Sally Ride, since the original trilogy's Commander Shepard was named after the first American man in space, Alan Shepard.
