Shadowrun: Hong Kong launches Kickstarter, succeeds goal in two hours

Shadowrun: Hong Kong launches Kickstarter, succeeds goal in two hours

Raises over a quarter million dollars in a day.

Shadowrun Returns developer Harebrained Schemes teased an upcoming Kickstarter campaign last month and now that campaign has launched. It's for Shadowrun: Hong Kong, and it's already raised over a quarter million dollars in its first day.

Heck, it smashed through it's $100K goal in a mere two hours. By hour three, it had achieved its first stretch goal of adding enhanced player controls. It's since raised a total of $276,761, enough to fund stretch goals for animatic scene transitions, new party member Ractor the Russian, and more animatic endings.

The original Shadowrun Returns grossed over $1.8m on Kickstarter, so this Hong Kong spinoff still has a ways to go before it can smash Harebrained Scheme's previous record, but it's got until 17th February to do that.

Shadowrun Returns review

Shadowrun Returns review

Hack to the future.

Slapping the word "Returns" on the end of a sequel often seems a little redundant. In the case of Shadowrun, however, it's perfectly appropriate. For fans who waited over 10 years for a follow-up to the classic 16-bit cyberpunk RPG, only to be given a multiplayer first-person shooter in 2007, the implication is not just that Shadowrun is back, but that it's back as it was meant to be.

Shadowrun Returns serves as sequel, reboot and homage all in one. It's a game that acknowledges the storylines of the previous games - both the SNES and Megadrive versions were completely different - while broadening its scope. Familiar gameplay systems also return, subtly evolved by modern design thinking.

This is a game made for the faithful, then, which means newcomers have some catching up to do. Fortunately the game is nimble in avoiding stodgy exposition, allowing the curious wrinkles of its genre-blending world to fall out naturally.

Shadowrun Returns release date set at 25th July

Shadowrun Returns release date set at 25th July

Later than expected but finished properly.

We'd been told to expect a Shadowrun Returns release in June but now the date has been pushed back and set officially as 25th July.

"We know we've been saying June for some time, but now that we've reached this final stage of development, and although our Kickstarter funding was spent some time ago, we've decided to invest additional time in bug fixing and polishing the game," explained developer Hairbrained Schemes. "That means a longer crunch period for a tired team, but everyone agrees that it's worth it.

"One of the most common pieces of Backer feedback we've received over the past year is that we should take the time we need to ship this game. We really appreciate that, and we know we've thanked you already about a hundred times, but we're doing it again because we mean it. Thanks.
