EverQuest 2 gets facial tracking system and voice filters

New webcam tech for long-running Sony MMO.

A fancy new facial tracking system is on its way to fantasy MMO EverQuest 2 to help make the game more immersive, developer Sony Online Entertainment has announced.

Dubbed SOEmote, it uses "revolutionary" motion tracking software created by UK animation outfit Image Metrics to map your facial movements onto your in-game character via a webcam.

On top of that, it will also add a filter to your voice so that other players hear you as the character you play as, whether that be an ogre, a troll or an elf.

Clever stuff. See the demonstration below for a look at exactly how it works.

Sony hasn't confirmed when it will go live, though more news is expected during E3 next week.
