Terraria heading to PSN and XBLA early next year

PC indie hit has sold 1.6 million copies.

Remember Terraria, the really popular 2011 indie game that's a bit like a 2D version of Minecraft but not really that similar? It's coming to PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade early next year.

That's courtesy of 505 Games and developer Engine Software. The one-man band that made Terraria originally, Andrew Spinks, doesn't appear to be directly involved, but he did supply a happy quote in the press release, so maybe he's overseeing production.

"I can't say how excited I am to finally have Terraria come to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3!" he blurted. "To see it come so far is a complete shock, especially after such humble beginnings. It's always been my dream to have as many people as possible know and enjoy Terraria as much as I have, and this is another big step in that direction!

"It's been awesome working with 505 Games, and I can't wait for everyone to see the additional features that they've been able to bring to this new edition of the game."

Those additional features aren't mentioned.

Terraria - a 2D, side-scrolling, RPG adventure game with a liberal dose of crafting and construction - has now sold 1.6 million copies since its 2011 release.

Our Phill Cameron attempted to put his finger on its charm at the time.
