Pokémon Go gets spooky new species for Halloween

Special research incoming, plus new hats.

Pokémon Go is yet to officially announce this year's big Halloween event, but we've already got a sneaky peek under the Mimikyu cloth at what's in store.

Notably, there's a new Special Research task - the first for a non-Mythical Pokémon - plus ghost and dark-type spawns, quests and new clothing items.

There may be spoilers ahead:

Serial Pokémon Go leaker Chrales has peered into the game's network traffic and found dialogue for a brand new Special Research task themed around Spiritomb, an odd Dark/Ghost type Pokémon you had to follow a complicated process to get in the main Pokémon games.

Thankfully the process to get Spiritomb in Pokémon Go seems a lot easier - the most difficult part seems to be catching 108 Pokémon, a reference to the 108 spirits Spiritomb is supposedly made up of.

Otherwise, this Halloween event will let you cosplay as Gengar via a new backpack, hat and shirt, among other new avatar items, and be rewarded for catching Dark and Ghost-type creatures, which are certain to be in abundance.

Giratina has been teased in both Gen 4 trailers so far.

There's no word yet on other new Pokémon launching, such as the evolutions of existing creatures like Froslass, Dusknoir, Mismagius, Weavile and Honchkrow.

We'd wager on the event going live soon - Mewtwo is due to leave legendary raids tonight, and spooky-looking Gen 4 legendary Giratina has already been teased for release.

Lavender Town theme return, please?
