Twinleaf Town Pokémon, trainers and items

After choosing your appearance, your name, and the name of your rival (officially named Barry), it's time to start the game itself.

You'll begin in your bedroom, watching something dramatic on TV. Head downstairs and talk to you Mum, who warns you about straying into long grass when you don't have any Pokémon. As you head outside, Barry will appear - he's an impatient chap, Barry, so impatient that he's already forgotten something back at his house.

Head to Barry's house and go upstairs and talk to him, then head north onto Route 201, then west and up into Verity Lakefront.

At Lake Verity, you'll encounter two people: Professor Rowan, and another character who's with them, either Lucas or Dawn (the opposite to the gender you chose for your own character).

They'll run off and leave something there - a briefcase, which you go to give back to them before being attacked by a Pokémon in the wild grass. This is your time to pick a starter, to help you out here but also stay with you for the rest of the game, so choose wisely!

Defeat the wild Starly, and then head back home via Route 201 again! On the way back to your home you'll run into the Professor and Lucas/Dawn again, and you're told to meet them at the Professor's lab, which is in Sandgem Town.

Before that, go back home to your Mum and talk to her, and she'll give you a pair of Running Shoes, which allows you to run faster (automatically by moving with the analog stick, or by holding down B while using the D-pad).
