What's New?

Not much new at retail this Friday.

As anticipated, January 9th has joined January 2nd in being almost completely devoid of any sort of shopping related interest for avid gamers such as yourself. Indeed, in this house it's once again been termed "catch up week", as yours truly scrambles to play any games missed out during the Christmas rush ahead of voting for our annual Top 50 Games feature in the near future...

There is one item on the release schedule which, according to various retailers at any rate, is definitely on store shelves this Friday, and that's the long awaited PS2 Online enabled driving combat title Destruction Derby Arenas.

Apart from that as yet untested title though, nothing makes it out. Unsurprisingly reports of Tribes: Aerial Assault's long overdue PS2 release proved premature, with a Vivendi-Universal spokesperson telling me yesterday that the publisher has no firm date for the game - despite Amazon listing it out today. Likewise Microsoft's NHL Rivals 2004 for Xbox is not out today, instead aiming for something like January 23rd.

All of which leaves us with very little to talk about. Um. Well. I guess I could tell you that I bought some new PC bits and pieces this week - that was nice - and last night I watched a rather demented Matrix-esque film called Equilibrium for the first time, which did at least convince me that Christian Bale could play Batman. It also reminded me of Fahrenheit 451 a little.

Right, that'll do for this week then. Join us again on January 16th for, er, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon's Xbox debut, Capcom's PS2 title Bombastic and potentially Take-Two's console ports of Mafia, although it looks as though those may have slipped to January 30th. Exciting month, this - I recommend you play something from 2003. Beyond Good & Evil, for example...
