Gearbox acquires Homeworld

In space, no one can hear you command a colony.

Borderlands and Aliens: Colonial Marines developer Gearbox has acquired the rights to Relic's fan-favourite space RTS series Homeworld following THQ's closure.

This may sound bizarre given the Dallas-based studio's penchant for shooters but according to Gearbox's announcement, the studio's chief creative officer Briant Martel is a huge fan of the series and "personally spearheaded the acquisition."

The studio noted that it intends to "preserve and assemble the purest form of the original acclaimed and beloved games, Homeworld and Homeworld 2, with the intent of making them accessible on today's leading digital platforms."

Last week a group of fans who crowdsourced over $50K to purchase the rights to Homeworld was outbid. Now we finally know who. The question is: will this be the Borderlands 2 Gearbox or the Duke Nukem Forever Gearbox? Only time will tell.
