Earlier this month Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 3 received backwards compatibility on Xbox One. Now they're both available on EA Access, the £3.99 a month service exclusive to Xbox One that grants players unlimited access to various EA titles.
Seven new games were added to the increasingly vast Xbox One backwards compatibility library.
Battlefield, a series famed for its multiplayer battles and not its ropey stories, will be turned into a television show. Anonymous Content, the company responsible for hit TV series True Detective, will be in charge, collaborating with Paramount and EA to make it happen.
EA has announced - and launched - Origin Access for PC. It costs £3.99 a month.
Origin Access is a similar offering to EA Access on Xbox One. Subscribers can download games from EA's Vault, play EA's PC games for a limited time before they're released, and save 10 per cent on Origin purchases.
15 games are available now (unfortunately no Star Wars: Battlefront). EA will add more games over time, it said:
EA has admitted that some Battlefield 3 players have been accidentally banned from the game.
DICE got the unlocks wrong in Battlefield 3, the developer has admitted. Speaking to VG247 at an event in Australia, creative director Lars Gustavsson accepted that the studio should be "slapped" for the way it stacked the deck against new players.
Imagine waking up to find that someone had turned your name into a video game Easter egg and hidden it inside one of the world's biggest shooters. Then imagine all this had happened nearly two years ago, and the internet had only just found it out after someone hacked into said game's innards.
It's now nearing two years since Battlefield 3 was released, and another Easter egg has just been discovered in the game.
Sony has announced its new roster of gaming goodies for PlayStation Plus subscribers in July.
Microsoft's stunning U-turn on its controversial Xbox One policies has delighted gamers and retailers - but are developers and publishers just as happy?
EA won't pay arms manufacturers for licensed digital replicas of their guns and war paraphernalia in its action games - Battlefield 4 - this year. But it will use them anyway.
A Schwarzenegger-sized Battlefield 3 multiplayer patch - 1.92GB - has appeared on Xbox Live.
Multiplayer Update 6 "contains improvements to the multiplayer portions of the game", the Xbox.com blurb reads. "We strongly advise you download it."
The patch arrives on the same day as End Game, Battlefield 3's fantastic new dirt bike-featuring DLC. (It's out for BF3 Premium members on PC and 360, just to be clear.)
There's a pleasing finality to calling a DLC pack "End Game". It's been well over a year since Battlefield 3 was released, and we can now look back over five expansion packs and truly appreciate how that core game has evolved and expanded. It's a view as impressive as anything conjured up by the Frostbite 2 engine over the last 16 months.
End Game is an appropriate swansong, showcasing DICE's open warfare at its best. As always there are four new maps, but the connection between them is less obvious than in previous packs. Rather than being linked by the implied narrative of an earthquake, as in Aftermath, or by nostalgia, as in Back to Karkand, this quartet follows a broad seasonal theme.
Kiasar Railroad is the spring offering, an undulating plot of land with - as the name suggests - a railway line cutting through it. A road slices through in the other direction creating a simple but effective crossroad layout. There's a lot of gentle verticality in the terrain here, with a forest and mountain feel sloping down towards a coastal area. Capture points for Conquest take advantage of the various features dotted around, such as a waterside canoe centre, a gas station and a cargo area. Each offers plentiful cover with small building interiors for soldiers in need of a more sturdy hiding place.
EA was conspicuously absent from Sony's PlayStation 4 unveiling. Now there's speculation that it's because Microsoft has signed a new partnership deal with EA.
Before you go bananas, this is unlikely to mean games will appear on the next Xbox and not PS4. It's more likely to concern timed-exclusive DLC.
CVG got wind of the partnership from a couple of anonymous sources, but neither had any more information on what it will be.
Oh right so motorbikes cut it but Camaros don't?
Most shooter map packs take a pick-and-mix approach, offering up a variety of layout types, locations and styles in order to make you feel better about handing over your money. DICE has been doing something different with Battlefield 3, however, by designing each add-on around a specific theme or gameplay style.
Back to Karkand was the retro pack, bringing popular maps of old into the new rotation. Close Quarters was a blatantly obvious two-finger salute to Call of Duty, ditching the epic scope expected from Battlefield maps and instead offering a tight, fast, headshot-centric experience. Armored Kill was all about the tanks, baby.
Aftermath is the most thematically focused yet, feeling like it should come in a cardboard box with a crinkly plastic window and the words Tehran Earthquake Playset emblazoned across the front. This is a collection of four maps all based around the devastating Iranian tremor that played an important role in the game's campaign mode - a bold idea, and one that is sometimes as limiting as it is inspired.
Battlefield 3 expansion Aftermath is available today for European PlayStation 3 owners. The download costs £11.99 or is free for those with Battlefield 3 Premium.
DICE will this week release a patch for Battlefield 3 that should please PlayStation 3 owners.
The update, out on 27th November on consoles and no later than 4th December on PC, addresses input lag on PS3. We now believe we have significantly improved this situation for all players, DICE said.
Sticking with the PS3 version of the first-person shooter, the patch improves audio stability. The audio dropouts reported by some PlayStation 3 gamers playing Battlefield 3 should now be fixed for the majority of players," DICE said.

DICE reckons fans are worried about the recent Battlefield 4 announcement "for all the wrong reasons".
Last month EA quietly announced Battlefield 4 with confirmation that you'll be able to play its beta by pre-ordering Medal of Honor: Warfighter, out this year.
With the BF4 beta scheduled for autumn 2013, the game is expected to launch October/November 2013. Some Battlefield fans complained that it will be released too soon after the release of Battlefield 3 (which launched six years after Battlefield 2) and that the announcement suggests the end for Battlefield 3 support.

DICE said it will feature vertical and horizontal urban combat, with cracks and fissures in the terrain providing cover and paths to objectives. EA has likened the difference between digital platforms Origin and Steam to the difference between Battlefield 3 and Call of Duty.
Digital sales platform Steam has a reputation for its 75 per cent sales - and many gamers love them. But for rival Origin and its maker EA, that's not the right approach.
Origin boss David DeMartini told Gamesindustry International that random deep-discounting of games "cheapens" IP, and promised not to copy the practice.
"We won't be doing that," he said, bluntly. "Obviously they think it's the right thing to do after a certain amount of time. I just think it cheapens your intellectual property.

The delay in releasing new DLC for Battlefield 3 is due to the team needing to recharge its batteries following the grueling run-in to launching the main game, according to a member of the development team.
EA is considering adopting a subscription model for future Battlefield titles, according to the publisher's games chief Patrick Soderlund.
When DICE announced at its recent Battlefield/Medal of Honor event that its upcoming pack of DLC, Close Quarters, would focus on tight, indoor firefights, reactions were understandably divisive. "If you're going to focus on an indoor shooter, you might as well play Call of Duty," said one voice in the room. "This is great. The worst part about Battlefield 3 is that it took too long to find anybody because the maps were so goddamn large," said another. "A part of me died when I saw that Medal of Honor trailer," said another yet.
While there's no accounting for taste, DICE is doing its darnedest to try by releasing themed DLC packs catered to fans with divergent play styles. While Close Quarters will focus on cramped infantry-focused indoor affairs, the following DLC, Armored Kill, promises to have the largest terrain of any Battlefield to date with loads of vehicles and epic scale wars. There will be a third pack too, Endgame, but DICE remains cagey on the details there.
"We want to widen the spectrum of how we play these games. It comes back to the idea of having choice as a player," DICE general manager, Karl-Magnus Troedsson explained. It's a smart move, and a decidedly honest model that ensures players will only have to pay for the type of experience they want, without having to fork over extra dough to collect their favourite maps spread haphazardly across several nondescript map packs.
A new and patched version of Battlefield 3: Back to Karkand will be available to download tomorrow, developer DICE has announced.
"This will fix the weapon animation bug that some of you have experienced," wrote Tommy Rydling on Battlelog.
"This download is free of charge if you have already bought Back to Karkand.

Alienware enters the small and (relatively) cheap PC market today with a new computer, the X51.
It costs £699, is slightly bigger than an Xbox 360 and is designed to work upright or laid on its side.
The bottom range X51 can power Battlefield 3 in 1080p at an average of 32 frames-per-second, with high resolution textures, 4x aniostropic filtering and medium anti-aliasing turned on.

The most pirated PC game of 2011 wasn't Modern Warfare 3, Battlefield 3 or Skyrim - it was Crysis 2.
EA will this weekend knock 50 per cent off the PC version of Battlefield 3 at digital platform Origin.
One of the less popular trends of 2011 was the ramping up of the retailer-exclusive in-game extra. You know the sort of the thing - pre-order a title from Game and get a couple of extra character skins, choose HMV and get some weapon unlocks, or give your money to Zavvi and get early access to a map.
Depending on where you stand, it's either a nice bit of added value or a nuisance that prevents fans experiencing absolutely everything a game has to offer. Until recently it's been fairly easy to ignore. But things took a left turn with the release of Batman: Arkham City earlier this year, when UK supermarket giant Tesco secured a significant slab of DLC content all for themselves - a separate set of missions called Joker's Carnival Challenge Map. A sign of things to come, perhaps?
With that in mind we approached a number of UK retailers, publishers and developers to find out more about the process, why it happens and whether gamers are doomed to suffer as a result.
Battlefield 3 developer DICE is aware of an issue with the Back to Karkand DLC on PlayStation 3 that occasionally borks a number of weapons and is working on a fix.

The file size is apparently due to the patch containing the majority of the Back to Karkand map pack which follows later in the week.
"This is not ideal, so we aim to make potential DLC content in the future as optional downloads," explained DICE.

Barely a month has passed in the last year without EA reiterating its intent for Battlefield to steal a significant share of the FPS market from Activision's Call of Duty, and in the long term to eventually overtake it.
With both games now on shelves and early sales figures in (Battlefield 3 did five million in a week, Modern Warfare 3 did more than 6.5 million in a day), a number of industry analysts have offered Eurogamer their thoughts on just how that strategy is panning out.
The consensus? Everyone's a winner.
EA has banned hundreds of Battlefield 3 cheaters across all platforms.
Some might say that the war was over before it truly began. The extraordinary sparring between Electronic Arts and Activision, encompassing developers and executives alike, may well have made for good copy for us journalist types, but where it matters - with the gamers - the results look rather one-sided. Preliminary sales data points to just one winner in the great Battlefield 3/Modern Warfare 3 kerfuffle: Activision has clearly emerged triumphant with what it is describing as the biggest launch in the history of the entire entertainment business.
Battlefield 3 was the top-selling game in the US for the month of October, selling just shy of two million copies, according to the latest NPD sales data.

For many PC gamers there is a nasty stigma attached to multi-platform releases. The common criticism is that the development of games on the PC platform, not to mention the commercial uptake of GPU hardware tailored towards new technologies such as DirectX 11, has been hamstrung by developers' growing attention towards the console platforms over the years.

At the moment, Asda direct (online), where the Standard Edition of the game on console costs £27.97.
Consider trade-ins, however, and HMV wins. There, Battlefield 3 costs £2.99 when you take back Forza Motorsport 4 or Batman: Arkham City.
If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then the folks at Infinity Ward and Treyarch must be feeling pretty special right now. In retooling DICE's military multiplayer favourite as a direct competitor to reigning heavyweight champ Call of Duty, EA has constructed a package that echoes its rival in so many ways it's downright eerie. If Call of Duty is Bridget Fonda, then Battlefield just became Jennifer Jason Leigh.
Nowhere is this more obvious than in the single-player campaign, which rather appropriately occupies a disc all to itself on the 360. Only tangentially related to the multiplayer side of the game, and more concerned with the sort of Hollywood heroics that propelled Activision's franchise to the top of the tree, it's remarkable just how badly it sells the Battlefield brand.
It opens, ominously enough, with a quick-time event. Press A to jump onto a train. Press the right trigger to display a non-interactive animation of our hero, disgraced marine Sgt Blackburn, beating up an enemy. Press B to dive out of the train window, then hammer A to climb onto the roof. And so on.

There were a few reviews online yesterday based on the PC version of the game. When it became apparent last week that there might be a distinction between timings for PC and console reviews, we asked for PC code but were told none was available. In an age where triple-A game development leads on console, there's a strong argument that cutting-edge PC development is a thing of the past, a relic of a bygone era. But next week, PC gaming enthusiasts can afford themselves a little old-school rejoicing, because DICE's Battlefield 3 changes that: it's a top-of-the-line experience that leverages the power of PC architecture and offers up a game that is technologically way in advance of its console siblings.

The Battlefield 3 beta has attracted more than six times the number of simultaneous players than the Battlefield: Bad Company 2 beta did.
Exactly how many concurrent players the Bad Company 2 beta had was never disclosed. The full Bad Company 2 game had, weeks after launch, a peak of 230,000 simultaneous players. Multiplied by six, that number is 1.38 million.
At that point, however, Battlefield: Bad Company 2 had sold 2.3 million copies. The Bad Company 2 demo/beta was downloaded more than 3.5 million times in the month it was available. Potentially, then, more people than 230,000 could have been playing simultaneously. That, in turn, suggests the Battlefield 3 beta has been played by upwards of 1.38 million gamers simultaneously.
Everything we have seen so far of Battlefield 3 on PC suggests a consummate example of video game warfare, realised by pushing back new barriers in rendering technology courtesy of DICE's phenomenal new Frostbite 2 engine. However, the lack of marketing focus on the console versions has led many to wonder whether current generation hardware has the power available to provide any kind of equivalent experience to the incredible DirectX 11 computer game. To put it blankly, can consoles really handle a satisfying Battlefield 3?

However, we do have a good sense of what not to expect.
