Supergiant Games' Greg Kasavin told Eurogamer that the title's success has given the fledgling studio the freedom to self-fund its next project and try something new.

Moving on.
About 20 years ago, "closure" became a thing that we wanted after something bad happened. When someone dies, we are told that the grieving parties desire closure - that they want to take the death, put it in a box, and tape the edges shut on that sucker until it is good and sealed.

Saturday Soapbox: Was 2011 a Vintage Year?
It may have lacked innovation, but the breadth of experiences made 2011 a year to savour.
A couple of weeks back, Oli told of how he spoke to a friend who believed that 2011 was the finest year for gaming since 2001 - and then promptly disagreed, saying how this year, for all that it's offered in terms of excellence, hasn't really offered anything particularly new. Games are now bigger and better, yes, but that heady thrill that defined gaming's last golden age is now gone.

Supergiant's Greg Kasavin on crafting this year's Summer of Arcade standout.
While perhaps not quite scaling the heights of previous years, the current Summer of Arcade season has thrown up a fine harvest so far - from the cute Metroid-with-Martians stylings of Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet, to Eric Chahi's ambitious attempt to breathe some life into the god game genre with From Dust. However, it's Supergiant Games' delightful isometric action RPG Bastion that has come closest to providing the class of 2011 with a Limbo or a Braid.

The pen is mightier.
It's a curious contradiction about game reviewers that we tend to wish games would move backwards just as much as we yearn for them to move forwards; they don't make 'em like they used to, they don't make 'em like they could do. They just make 'em like they do. Boring.
Fortified.
You can't swing a chainsaw bayonet in a video game these days without hitting a choice that has consequences for you further down the line. The last three games I completed ended in "kill him or don't kill him" showdowns, and most of the stuff on my wish list for the rest of the year will test my moral compass as much as my dexterity.
If you ask me, at some stage we are going to have to consider the consequences of our choosing nothing but games about nothing but choice and consequence. In the meantime, a game like Bastion, which blurs the line between agency and fate in new and interesting ways, is rather welcome.
Bastion is an isometric action role-playing game where you pick up the pieces after an apocalyptic event - called the Calamity - which has splintered the beautiful lands of Caelondia into floating fragments in the sky and filled them with angry critters. It's your job, as a hero known only as The Kid, to discover what happened by picking through ashes and memories with a range of increasingly devastating weaponry.

Juarez! Insect Armageddon! PS3 Double Packs!
This week sees gaming's first Western since last year's epic Red Dead Redemption. Can Call of Juarez: The Cartel compete? The third entry in Techland's cowboy series is taking a very bold tack - uprooting the shooting from the genre's classic timeframe and dumping gamers in the modern day.

It began, as ever, with a leak. With just hours to go until Microsoft's absurdly lavish... Wait a second, this is last year's intro. Oh well, it turns out it still works: where last year we heard about Kinect before we'd even donned our space ponchos, this year we knew about Halo 4 and several new Kinect sequels before Don Mattrick even had a chance to start educating us about "growth and innovation".
