Devil May Cry 5 patch pulls lens flare butt cover-up on PS4 - but not in Europe

Crack on.

It's another puzzling situation for Devil May Cry 5, this time for European PlayStation 4 users.

MILD SPOILERS FOR DEVIL MAY CRY 5 AHEAD.

Capcom issued an update for the game that adds the Bloody Palace mode, and with it pulled the lens flare butt cover-up that was included with the 18-rated action game on PS4 at launch.

But, strangely, patch 1.07 only changes the game for the US version. The European version remains as it did - with lens flare covering up Trish's bum.

We've verified this is the case with our own copy of the game on PS4 and, post update, there's no change in the cutscene that sees Trish carried naked to safety by Dante.

Capcom did not indicate the patch would make any change to Devil May Cry 5's censorship, nor has it explained why the change was made now, or why it doesn't apply to the European version of the game. We've asked the publisher for comment.

It's a puzzling one, but, once again, fans are speculating it may have something to do with a recent Sony policy that appears to be about toning down sexual content on PS4. This is something that's cropped up a few times over the past year or so. Back in October 2018, for example, Senran Kagura Burst Re:Newal's PS4 release was delayed after Sony told its publisher to remove the controversial Intimacy Mode (the Steam version, by the way, included the Intimacy Mode). At the time, the game's localisation producer said this was the result of "a brand new policy" at Sony.

It's worth remembering the Trish lens flare cover-up only occurred in the western version of the PS4 version of Devil May Cry 5. It does not occur in the Japanese version on PS4, nor does it occur in the PC and Xbox One versions worldwide.
