Call of Duty Modern Warfare lets you reload while aiming down sights

Stay on target.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare has an Aim Down Sight reload, Infinity Ward has revealed.

It's the first time a Call of Duty game has included such a feature for weapons by default (Black Ops 4 has a weapon attachment that lets you maintain ADS while reloading certain sniper rifles).

Normally, when you reload while aiming down sights you're pulled out of ADS into the default view, and you have to wait for the reload animation to play out before you can snap back in. Call of Duty Modern Warfare's weapons, however, stay on their target while you reload.

In a blog post on Activision's website, animation director Mark Grigsby discussed the new feature.

"One other thing we added this year is the ADS [Aiming Down Sight] reload. In the past, if you're ADS, and you're shooting and you reload, the weapon would go off to the side, and you'd have to retrain to get to your target. This time if you reload, it stays on the target, so you can stay in the battle."

This has interesting implications for the way Call of Duty plays across all modes. Veteran players have a muscle memory attached to nailing the timing of pulling out of ADS to reload, and the fact you've always had to accommodate for it has led to specific strategies around cover and retreat. Will it encourage camping?

Activision continues to drip-feed information about Call of Duty Modern Warfare following the game's reveal. Emma checked it out at E3 last month, and wrote about the problem with its child soldier level.
