Assassin's Creed 4 reveals Discovery Mode, debuts co-op footage

Confirms there won't be naval battles in multiplayer.

The first footage of Assassin's Creed 4's co-op modes, Discovery and Unleashed, have been revealed as an enhanced version of Assassin Creed 3's Wolfpack co-op mode.

As detailed by VG24/7, Discovery is the most major addition as it's a story-based mini-campaign that teaches players the ropes of co-op. It's available for up to four players.

Once players acclimate to that, there's Unleashed mode, which tasks players with working together to guard chests, eliminate disguised foes, pull off synchronised kills, and kill "infected" enemies that can only be harmed once you've retrieved a package.

Assassin's Creed 4 will also have a Gamelab mode where players can tweak the parameters of the multiplayer to make a mode that's pistols-only or disables the scores for everything save killing.

Sadly, what Assassin's Creed won't have in multiplayer is naval warfare. Lead multiplayer game designer Tim Browne told VG24/7 that combining these two would be "impossible," and that implementing it into single-player was already an arduous feat.

"You have to take into consideration that it took a very big dedicated team in Singapore about two-and-a-half years to do it for the solo [play]." said Browne. "We've looked at it and we've considered it. We seriously considered it. We think it would be cool, but at the same time we tried it, and for technical reasons it's impossible."

Assassin's Creed 4 is due on 1st November in Europe - and 29th October in North America - on Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U and PC. PS4 and Xbox One versions will follow.
