Guan Yu beauties!

The next historical Total War game will be set in 190CE China and focus on the Three Kingdoms period. If you've played Dynasty Warriors, you'll know it rather well.

Total War fans have been eagerly awaiting news of the next historical title for some time now, with Warhammer having dominated much of Creative Assembly's attention in recent years.

So what do we know about the Three Kingdoms period, other than it being one of the bloodiest in all of Chinese history? Well, thanks to an incredibly influential novel penned in the 14th century titled 'Romance of the Three Kingdoms', we tend to think of that era as a time of legendary heroes: namely Cao Cao, Liu Bei and Sun Ce, the heads of the three dynasties.

Watching the trailer above, it looks like Total War is eager to embrace these legends, rather than seek complete historical accuracy. What does that mean for gameplay? I'd hazard a guess it means Creative Assembly will be building upon the Legendary Lord mechanic introduced in Total War: Warhammer.

Let's just hope they nerf Lu Bu.

We're told to expect Total War: Three Kingdoms on PC by "Fall 2018".
