Tekken Tag Tournament 2 announced

Out in Japan next summer.

A sequel to PlayStation 2 launch game Tekken Tag Tournament is in the works, Namco Bandai announced at the Tokyo Game Show.

Tekken Tag Tournament 2 is due out in Japanese arcades in the summer of next year, with Western release dates to be determined.

As the title suggests, TTT2 focuses on two-on-two battles, with characters swapping in mid-combo to dish out juggle damage.

Spiky-haired series stalwarts Jin Kazama and Kazuya Mishima make the roster, as do Asuka Kazama and Leo.

And thousand-year-old fighting granddad Heihachi Mishima and Lili both look likely after popping up in the reveal trailer.

Gameplay wise, we're looking at the classic 3D fighting system Tekken is known for, with a cross between Tekken 6 and the expansion of Tekken Tag's tag mechanics.

Director Katsuhiro Harada told Joystiq the team first thought about doing the game before Tekken 6, but a desire to see how far the Tekken graphics engine could be pushed sparked a full-blown sequel to 6 instead of the "more difficult" Tag 2.

TTT2 joins Tekken x Street Fighter on Namco Bandai's fighting game slate.
