Dark Souls 2 shifts over 1m

How do sales compare to Dark Souls 1?

From Software's adventure game Dark Souls 2 shipped over 1m, Bandai Namco has announced.

The Japanese company shifted 1.2m copies of the game in North America and Europe - and that's just on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The PC version launched after the end of the financial year, so sales of that version weren't counted.

How does that compare to its predecessor, Dark Souls? In April 2013 From Software said the game had sold more than 2.3m copies worldwide, but that figure included sales of the PS3 version in Japan and the Artorias of the Abyss Edition. The original version of Dark Souls sold 1.3m internationally on PS3 and Xbox 360, so Dark Souls 2 isn't far behind.

Will Dark Souls 2 also see a new edition?

In its report of its financial year ending 31st March 2014, Bandai Namco said Dragon Ball Z Battle of Z shipped 620,000 units, Vita game God Eater 2 shipped 700,000 units in Japan, PlayStation 3 fighting game Jo Jo's Bizarre Adventure All Star Battle shipped 550,000 in Japan, and 3DS game Disney Magic Castle My Happy Life shipped 500,000 units, again in Japan.

But it was Dark Souls 2 that was the standout performer for Bandai Namco in a year that saw increased revenue but shrinking profit.

During the year the publisher generated revenue of 507 billion yen (£2.9 billion) for a 25 billion yen (£145m) profit. Sales were up 4.2 per cent on the previous year but profit was down 22.6 per cent.

Bandai Namco does much more than video games. It does big business out of toys, arcades and merchandise. Its biggest property is the Mobile Gundam franchise, which it said generated a whopping 80.2 billion yen during the financial year - that's £464m.
