The 3DS version of side-scrolling platform adventure game Cave Story arrives in Europe in this summer, NIS America has announced.

The game's visuals have been completely overhauled for Nintendo's new glasses-free 3D handheld.

Created single-handedly by Japanese DIY developer Daisuke 'Pixel' Amaya, Cave Story first launched on PC back in 2004, with an updated WiiWare version following last year, winning 9/10 from Eurogamer.

A DSiWare version has also launched in the US, though is yet to make it over to Europe.

For the 3DS release, NIS America has teamed up with US developer Nicalis, Inc.

"I feel great possibilities working with Nicalis," NIS America producer Jack Niida said. "They're both skilled and dedicated with making no compromises. I think fans of the original Cave Story will be pleased with this latest incarnation.

"Also through this partnership, we would like to bring new life to the legendary game and make it accessible to a new range of audiences."
