Ubisoft has just announced that Assassin's Creed II sold 1.6m units worldwide in one week, according to "internal estimates".

That's 32 per cent better than the original Assassin's Creed, which is still the fastest-selling new IP that North America has ever seen.

The increase may be attributed to Assassin's Creed II being a much better game. Eurogamer scored the original Assassin's Creed 7/10 and gave the sequel 9/10.

Assassin's Creed II débuted at number two in the UK All-Formats chart this week, denied top billing by the colossal Modern Warfare 2. Activision's war game sold 1.7m copies in one day in the UK alone, and around 4.7m copies globally in 24 hours. First-week sales have not been revealed but are expected to be around the 7m mark.

It's worth noting, however, that Assassin's Creed II had fewer days on sale before counting, having been released on a traditional Tuesday (US) and Friday (UK) timetable. Modern Warfare 2, remember, arrived globally on Tuesday 10th November.
