With more than 67 million players logging in each month, League of Legends is the most popular video game in the world. Actually, that sentence doesn't even do it justice - those numbers are about two years out of date by now, and developer Riot Games claims today's figures are "substantially" higher.

But how did they manage it? Even within the same genre, Riot are today having to fend off the likes of Valve and Blizzard Entertainment, and it feels like almost every other major publisher has at least thought about developing their own MOBA. But very few have even come close to League of Legends. Why is that, exactly? In an effort to answer this multi-billion-dollar question, I visited the Riot Games headquarters at the start of the year and asked some questions. Here's what I've got.
