Star Citizen's client expected to be around 100GB

Gargantuan space adventure raises nearly $75m.

Star Citizen - the colossal crowdfunded space trading and combat game by Wing Commander creator Chris Roberts - could be a 100GB download just for the client, developer Roberts Space Industries has revealed.

"The size and number of assets that are left to deliver means that our client size is much more likely to be 100GB," said director of game operations Jeremy Masker on the developer's official forum.

Patches will be pretty huge too. "We are optimising game patching for speed and to only deliver diffs, but this is unlikely to reduce actual patch size," Masker added. "Again, each patch has 100s of assets, each of these assets are at times 200mb, this leads to 2-6GB patches, and if we end up doing a file type re-factor and have to re-download 30-40 per cent of the assets on the hard-drive, then the patch will be 14-20GB."

That's a pretty hefty system requirement for Star Citizen, but then again, it is the most successful crowdfunded project of all-time by some margin. It set the Guinness World Record for that on 4th March 2014 when it raised $39,680,576 (about £23.7m), and it's currently at $74,960,777 (about £50.2m).
