Star Citizen impresses at CitizenCon with big new procedural planets video

Is that a Mako? Are they sand people? And is that a giant worm?

Another corker of a Star Citizen gameplay video just aired at the annual CitizenCon bash, and this one has a sort of Mako vehicle, sort of sand people and a sort of giant worm!

Specifically it shows off Star Citizen's procedural planet-making abilities which, yes I know that's a sensitive subject, but look at the results here. Those vistas are gobsmacking. Trees! Deserts! Other living things! And those sky-boxes? They're not - that's the game world. Whatever the unrestricted view distance touches, you should be able to get to.

The mission demonstrated is apparently indicative of the kind of planetary missions we'll be carrying out in Star Citizen, the game's leader, Chris Roberts, said. They'll be handcrafted missions supplemented with "algorithmic" content. The demo also shows us a stealth takedown.

There's an added demonstration from the archived Twitch stream. Make sure you watch towards the end when the demonstrator warps from the surface of one planet straight into the atmosphere of another.

Earlier in the talk, Chris Roberts outlined the road ahead for Star Citizen in the upcoming year. To reiterate: the below represents about a year's worth of content, not that Roberts particularly wished to be held to any hard and fast dates. I didn't include the listed ships in my bullet points, or the mention of expanding into other solar systems. Roberts wouldn't offer detail on the latter but did on the former, and you can see it on the slides in the video.
