Prepare yourself for the arrival of a whole new gaming genre - the Nintendo DS is to get its first "Rock 'n' Roll Brawler" early next year, according to D3Publisher.

Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi is based on the Cartoon Network series of the same name and sees you roaming around the globe, defeating your enemies using nothing but the power of music.

The action is displayed on the DS's top screen while the touch screen shows a guitar played with the stylus. Fans of the TV series can expect to see some familiar locations, and enemies include crazed fans and rival bands.

You can earn popularity points and special gifts by "rocking out" on stage, and upgrade your guitar by visiting the shops dotted around each level. There's a two-player Wi-Fi co-op mode and a load of funky mini-games to play, including one where you can make your own sushi to feed heroes Ami and Yumi or their pet cats.

A previously announced GBA version of Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi is due out at the end of this year, with the DS game following in 2006.
