League of Legends to be free to play

DotA-Allstars veterans confident.

Riot Games has announced that its upcoming multiplayer RTS/RPG hybrid League of Legends will be free to play.

LOL (yeah) is due out this September on PC, and the developer said it will use microtransactions to make some dosh out of it.

However, while it's allowing you to buy virtual money, it's "to be used within the Summoner system meta game for play diversity, customisation and novelty", so you can't simply buy your way to the top.

Specifically, you'll be able to buy Riot Points, but it's only Influence Points - earned exclusively through battle - that can be spent on Runes, which increase your character's power.

There will also be a Collector's Pack boxed version for USD 29.99, which will include exclusive extras like two unique Champion skins, various Champions, Runes and Riot Points.

League of Legends is a multiplayer game derived from the famous Defence of the Ancients Warcraft III modification, in which you direct a Champion unit to work with others to capture control points, levelling yourself up as you go.
