GTA V to be announced before E3?

Analyst reckons suspension is building.

Games industry analyst Mike Hickey has said a Grand Theft Auto V announcement may be on the way - and that it could be made before E3 kicks off in June.

"There is building suspension for a pre-E3 GTA V announcement," he said, as reported by Industrygamers. "Although we expect nothing from Rockstar at this year’s official E3 event."

Rockstar is more likely to hold a separate press event and make the announcement independent of any publisher conferences, apparently. That's because GTA V really is kind of a big deal.

Strong performance for the DS with four titles in the top ten.

Out later this month.

Not long now until Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories is out on PS2 - and Rockstar's teed up a little trailer to give you a little taste of what to expect. You can watch it now over on Eurogamer TV.

Although basically a straight port of the PSP game - albeit without the multiplayer component - Liberty City Stories still goes down well, and at £20 or so it's not going to break the bank either.

You can see what we made of it in today's review, written after a rather indulgent weekend spent largely with the curtains drawn and caps going off in asses.

Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories

A Grand don't come for free (but £20 seems reasonable).

"Not a truly outstanding new Grand Theft Auto game then, but an excellent PSP game. Although I do wonder how it'd do in a year's time," he said, summing up Liberty City Stories on the PSP, ooh, six months ago.

Well, I doubt those extra six months I wondered about would make a lot of difference, because while this is a fairly straightforward port of the PSP game, at £20 it's one of the best-value PlayStation 2 games you'll be able to buy all summer.

Shorn of multiplayer that, while good, was never the focus anyway, what's left is a singular, familiar, thoroughly proven and ultimately not that self-critical take on Grand Theft Auto's 3D initiation. Liberty City is more or less the same place it was back when GTA III was such a revelation, and returning to it now with motorbikes, improved animation and third-person targeting, and the ability to dive out of a car while it's moving is surprisingly satisfying.

Liberty City PS2 slips again

DS: Double Trouble?

Having launched back in March 2005, Nintendo's new handheld had almost a six-month head-start on Sony's PSP, but, in the final 2005 reckoning still found itself overtaken by the more powerful, more expensive machine. DS game sales accounted for an impressive-sounding 1.66m units, or three per cent of all games sold. By value, DS titles accounted for 3.4 per cent of the entire market with £4.14m.

Warren Spector, the former studio head of Ion Storm Austin and the brains behind Deus Ex, has slammed game developers for relying on tried and tested formulas instead of coming up with new ideas.

Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories

There are two ways to look at this GTA on PSP malarkey: 1) It's dull and unadventurous. 2) It's huge, vibrant and full of endeavour.

It is, by design, witty, varied and hugely endearing. There's a reason I'm not bored of the GTA formula yet, and why none of the clones have overtaken Rockstar: the most important rules that govern the world are very effective. You will be able to drive cars like a stuntman, and they will only break if you treat them like wrecking balls or flip them on their backs. You will be able to blow things up and perform implausible vehicular acrobatics. You will be able to listen to the music or comedy interludes of your choice. You will only fall foul of the cops when you directly annoy them or do more than a few excessively naughty things in succession. You will find new toys and treats lurking just where they look like they might be hiding. Almost everything can be fixed within five minutes of screwing it up. For all its quirks when you get out of the car, when you're in one it'll feel like an adventure playground and a ball-pond rolled into one. Liberty City Stories gets all of this right.

Even so, one could easily argue that it's dull and unadventurous. Held up against GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas, surely it is! It's full of samey missions, straightforward objectives, forgettable characters and familiar quirks and flaws.
