Final Dreamfall Chapters episode gets a release date

Final Dreamfall Chapters episode gets a release date

Not quite the longest journey but it's been going a while.

The final episode of Dreamfall Chapters, Book Five: Redux, will be released 17th June. A stirring teaser trailer was released that shows a montage of scenes from the game.

From 17th June, then, the full Dreamfall Chapters series will be available. This began a year-and-a-half ago with the launch of Book One: Reborn. We wrote a review for Book One: Reborn but haven't reviewed the other episodes - we preferred to wait for the series to finish and play the whole thing.

The Dreamfall Chapters Season Pass, which includes all episodes, is currently heavily discounted on GOG.com, down two thirds to $11.49. You can also unlock the game for free by spending around $30 on other stuff in the GOG.com summer sale - it's all part of some XP system. On Steam the game is £23.99. You can't buy episodes separately.

Dreamfall Chapters emerges from rough patch better than ever

Dreamfall Chapters emerges from rough patch better than ever

UPDATE: Book Four releases Thursday, 3rd December.

UPDATE 30TH NOVEMBER: Red Thread Games has announced that Book Four Revelations will be released this Thursday, 3rd December. The date came at the end of a new trailer, which shows this Unity 5-built episode in all its glory.

ORIGINAL STORY 26TH NOVEMBER: While we've been looking the other way, small Norwegian studio Red Thread Games has been having a rough time. It was to do with porting Dreamfall Chapters to new game engine Unity 5. All the early signs were encouraging and the logic was sound: Unity 5 is a more capable engine that will be supported for years. But the reality, to quote Red Thread leader Ragnar Tornquist, was like "a real-life survival RPG".

What should have taken a couple of people a couple of months ended up taking a handful of people four months, all working overtime to try and keep Book Four - the fourth instalment in the episodic adventure series - on track for 21st October release date at the same time. But they couldn't manage it. So in addition to fraught staff, the Unity 5 saga cost 10-person Red Thread thousands and thousands of dollars, both in terms of production costs as well as missed revenue from Book Four. "All things considered, the final price tag is probably in excess of $150,000," wrote Tornquist. "That's a painful amount of money for a small - and cash-strapped - studio like ours."

Dreamfall Chapters Book One release date announced

The first instalment of Dreamfall Chapters - Book One: Reborn - will be released 21st October on PC and Mac.

This is the first of five episodes; the second will apparently not be far behind.

All three including Wii U, although PS4 ahead of the rest.

The sixth batch of games to get greenlit on Steam Greenlight have been announced today and there's some pretty good-looking titles in its ranks.

Shovel Knight, the retro platformer by the former WayForward staff at Yacht Club Games has been accepted, as has the bubonic plague-themed RTS Death, Inc by some ex-Media Molecule staff (despite its failed Kickstarter). Fan-favourite adventure series The Longest Journey will be coming to Valve's popular distribution portal as well with Dreamfall Chapters.

Plus timings for Project Eternity, Dreamfall Chapters, Frozen Endzone and more.

Rezzed: The PC and Indie Games Show is returning to the UK this June and in my role as curator of the developer sessions I've been beavering away over the last few months organising this year's schedule. I've got enough of it together now that I can let you know exactly when the majority of this year's sessions will take place.

A bit of background for those of you who are lost: Rezzed (tickets available at Rezzed.com) is a two-day show taking place on the weekend of 22nd/23rd June at the NEC in Birmingham, UK. Now in its second year, it allows attendees to go hands-on with the latest PC and indie games before release and - like its big brother, the Eurogamer Expo - there's also a schedule of developer sessions.

Some of the highlights of this year's schedule include Chris Avellone from Obsidian Entertainment coming over to talk Project Eternity, Red Thread Games' Ragnar Tornquist bringing Dreamfall Chapters, and another couple that I can unveil today - Mode 7 Games will be introducing Frozen Endzone at 2pm on Saturday, and Creative Assembly will be showing live code of Rome 2: Total War on stage on the Sunday.

Kickstarter funding drive nearly successful with weeks to spare.

Red Thread Games has shared a video of Dreamfall Chapters: The Longest Journey in action.

It shows heroine Zoe exploring a sunshine-flooded forest. The video demonstrates the hybrid third-person-point-and-click control scheme.

Red Thread stressed on Kickstarter that what you're seeing is "very early prototype footage". Frame-rate, art, animations and UI will all improve significantly. Zoe is a placeholder model dressed in her old Dreamfall clothes, and all the environment assets are temporary.

Dreamfall Chapters will be a single-player adventure game for PC and Mac

Ragnar Tornquist wants to fund it via Kickstarter.

A brand new instalment in The Longest Journey adventure series was announced last week: Dreamfall Chapters. The Longest Journey creator Ragnar Tornquist is in charge and he'll make the game at his new studio Red Thread Games. He'll also remain at Funcom overseeing the MMO he fathered, The Secret World.

He's departed Funcom to found own studio.

Update: Funcom's been in touch to clarify that Ragnar Tornquist is still very much an employee. He didn't leave to start his new company Red Thread Games: he established the company separately to get Dreamfall Chapters into pre-production. He'll combine this role with his creative director role on The Secret World for the foreseeable future.
