Game legend Ian Livingstone to be made CBE

Games Workshop, Fighting Fantasy and Eidos mastermind makes New Years Honours list.

Game legend Ian Livingstone is to be made made a CBE.

The Games Workshop co-founder, Fighting Fantasy co-creator and Eidos life president was included in the New Year Honours list, published on his 63rd birthday.

“I'm unbelievably happy, proud and delighted to be in the New Year Honours list to be appointed CBE,” he tweeted. “And it's my birthday today too!”

Livingstone was a key player in the success of Eidos Interactive and the Tomb Raider series, which propelled its acrobatic star Lara Croft into the mainstream.

Before that he launched Games Workshop and wrote a number of Fighting Fantasy books alongside Steve Jackson, including the seminal The Warlock of Firetop Mountain. Last year he released another choose your own adventure, called Blood of the Zombies.

Much of Livingstone's recent work has revolved around highlighting the poor quality of computer teaching in the UK's schools. Next Gen, a report he co-authored, helped convince the government to overhaul information and communications technology (ICT) classes in England so programming was given a boost.

“A thoroughly well deserved award," wrote Labour MP for West Bromwich East Tom Watson on Twitter.
