Fils-Aime: Wii not going anywhere soon

Has a "very long life in front of it".

Reggie Fils-Aime has reassured/upset Nintendo fans by promising them that the Wii will be around for years to come.

Talking to BusinessWeek, the US boss said, "We are confident the Wii home entertainment console has a very long life in front of it."

Fils-Aime explained that stagnating Wii hardware sales will be reinvigorated by the launch of Metroid: Other M and Super Mario Galaxy 2 this year.

Nintendo will counter the 'entertainment hub' dreams of PS3 and Xbox 360 by unleashing streaming Netflix videos on Wii. In 480p.

Suggestions that Nintendo had an HD Wii ready to unveil last year were commonplace, and E3 2009 was the expected time and place for a reveal. But it never happened.

Fils-Aime went on record in November 2009 to say that adding HD output would not be enough to warrant a new Wii console.

As Sony's PS3 Slim gains momentum ahead of the PS3 wand release this spring, and as Microsoft's Xbox 360 prepares for Natal's arrival this autumn, Nintendo's ambivalence as the market's leader may be short lived.
