Sony plans to lower the wholesale price of PlayStation 2 by several thousand yen in Japan (this morning, 1,000 yen = €8.15), which should prompt retailers to drop the street price. Furthermore, Sony plans to bundle Insomniac's Ratchet & Clank with the console in a new "Action Pack" for 26,800 yen (€218).

The reason for the wholesale price drops is to do with a new model PS2 being released on November 21st. The SCPH-39000 is a new revision and costs less to make.

The good news is that the potential is there for more price drops in the US and Europe as the SCPH-39000 penetrates markets outside Japan.
