Sunless Sea more than doubles dev's best case scenario sales estimate

Sunless Sea more than doubled developer Failbetter's best case scenario sales estimate.

If the chart goes up, then I'm happy.

As of 25th February, Failbetter's Victorian Gothic storytelling curio had sold 100,000 copies.

In a post on the Failbetter website, analyst Adam Myers said before development began the London-based independent studio had estimated Sunless Sea would sell anything from 5000 copies at worst to 50,000 at best.

"We're delighted, and deeply grateful to everyone who made this possible," Myers said.

"Everyone who gave us feedback on the game. Everyone who trusted us enough to back the game on Kickstarter, or buy it during early access. Everyone who shared their expertise.

"Our wonderful Fallen London players. Thank you all! We can continue releasing free updates. And we can keep on making the games we want to make, with stories that get into your dreams."

In his post Myers goes into detail on the sales of the game on Steam Early Access through to launch proper. It's worth a read.

Simon Parkin loved Sunless Sea, awarding it an Essential recommendation in Eurogamer's review (that's a 10/10 in old money).

"Sunless Sea's method of storytelling isn't unique," he wrote, "but it has never been realised with such impact and elegance."
