Next week, Destiny's long-running melee issue gets a fix

We're pleased as punch.

Destiny will receive a fresh update next week with fixes for a variety of bugs, including the game's long-running melee issue.

The problem? Punches sometimes fail to register damage, despite the fact you saw them land. It happened rarely, but was still noticable enough to be a problem.

"When a melee attack seems like it connects, but it doesn't do any damage, this is usually a networking problem," sandbox engineer Jon Cable wrote in this week's Destiny blog update.

"Most commonly, it occurs when there is an issue communicating your position to the other machines in the game, or if your would-be victim is having a similar problem. I've tweaked some networking logic related to player positions during melee attacks which should help address these issues. This error can still occur, because the internet isn't perfect, but it should be better."

Another issue occurred when a melee punch simply "whiffed" past opponents - something that was more a sandbox problem, Cable continued. This has also been addressed.

Patch 2.2.0.2 will arrive next week and begin the fixes for this, although sandbox changes will roll out slowly over next weekend to avoid breaking anything else in the process.
