Mojang's Scrolls re-released for free under new name
"I'm sure there's a good reason for it."
Minecraft maker Mojang has re-released its online collectible card game Scrolls for PC under a new name: Caller's Bane. It's also now completely free to download.
The game was previously mothballed by Mojang - development ceased back in 2015 - so it's a surprise to see it return today.
Scrolls' name change is less of a surprise - back in the day, Mojang and The Elder Scrolls publisher Bethesda came to legal blows over Scrolls' title. Ultimately, the pair decided Mojang's Scrolls could exist as long as it did not compete with The Elder Scrolls, and that neither company would squabble over the trademark.
Of course, Bethesda now has its own The Elder Scrolls card game - The Elder Scrolls Legends - which launched last year.
Today's blog post from Mojang pokes fun at Scrolls' rebranding:
"It's time! We're releasing the game for free, for anyone to enjoy," Mojang's Måns Olson wrote. "The team's been working towards this behind the scenes for a long time now. I'm thrilled we're finally here! To those of you who've waited patiently for this, thanks. You're the best. <3
"Ah, but hold on. We've got a new name - 'Caller's Bane'. I'm sure there's a good reason for it. Perhaps we just didn't like the sound of 'Scrolls'. Either way, it's still the same game you've known and loved."
You can download the game now via Caller's Bane's new website, which explains how fans can now set up their own servers: "Of note, you can re-balance the game entirely, change some of the rules, create new trials, and many other things, straight in the database. It's quite powerful!"
