Microsoft sets a Q4 record with $18.06 billion in revenue
Yet reports its first ever quarterly loss.
Microsoft reported its highest fiscal fourth quarter revenue ever, according to a new earnings report.
Setting a new record in fiscal Q4 - or regular Q2 for those unfamiliar with fiscal-speak - Microsoft reported revenue of $18.06 billion, a notable increase from last year's $17.37 billion in the same quarter.
However, it's operating income was $192 million and its loss per share was $0.06. This resulted in a net loss of $492 million for the quarter, which compares poorly next to last year's gain of $5.87 billion for the same three month period. (Editor's note: This is Microsoft's first ever quarterly loss!)
The reason for this loss in spite of record high revenue was due to a one-time "goodwill impairment charge" of $6.2 billion associated with the botched aQuantive acquisition.
Also noteworthy is that the Entertainment and Devices Division's revenue increased by roughly $292 million or 20 per cent, ostensibly due to Skype integration.
Microsoft shipped 1.1 million Xbox 360 consoles, a step down from last year's 1.7 million during the same quarter. Still, it remained the top selling console in the US for the 18th month in a row.
