Legends of Grimrock 2 officially announced

"DLC would have limited too much what we can do."

First-person grid-based dungeon crawler Legends of Grimrock will be getting a sequel, developer Almost Human announced.

Evidently, the studio just decided to commit to a full sequel at a meeting earlier today, though it had been mulling over the idea for awhile and wasn't sure if it wanted to create a whole new game or simply DLC. As was the case with Hotline Miami developer Dennaton Games, Almost Human decided to expand upon its initial DLC plans for a full-length sequel.

"Creating a mere DLC or expansion to Grimrock simply would not have felt right," said Almost Human co-founder Petri Häkkinen on the company blog. "As today's meeting proved, we still have a lot of ideas we'd like to explore, lots and lots of new content already done (originally made for a DLC/expansion) and a big engine update in the works. Simply put, a DLC would have limited too much what we can do. With a full blown sequel we can raise Grimrock to the next level."

Häkkinen also assured players that the development blog would be updated more regularly than it's been in recent months. "We'd like to be able to talk openly and honestly about the cool things happening here at the office, just like we did when we were working on Legend of Grimrock. The problem is that it's hard to talk about the things we're doing if we don't know for sure what the end result will be, if it's going to be a DLC or something else."

The first Legends of Grimrock was well-received critically and went on to sell 600,000 copies. That's a lot for an indie developer. Our Dan Whitehead was quite fond of the first game, which he awarded an 8/10 in his Legends of Grimrock review.
