Epic releases Paragon assets for free ahead of game's shutdown

Forthright.

Usually when video games die they are consigned to the history books, never to be officially played again. Epic, though, is doing things a little differently with dead game walking Paragon.

Dekker, one of the Paragon characters whose assets are free to developers.

Amid the astonishing rise of free-to-download Battle Royale game Fortnite, Epic announced its other game, free-to-download MOBA Paragon would close down on 26th April after it failed to find an audience.

Now, Epic has said $12m worth of Paragon assets will be free to all developers to use with the Unreal game engine, which opens up Paragon's character models, animations, environments, VFX and dialogue related to all of the game's 20 heroes to appear in other titles. There are over 1500 environment components and a sample map to tinker with, too.

The assets are free from the Unreal Engine Marketplace. Expect more Paragon-related assets to be made available to download there throughout the summer.

Perhaps some enterprising developer will use the assets to build a new and improved kind of Paragon. Meanwhile, for Epic it's all hands on deck for Fortnite, which is the hottest game on earth right now. The game's already out on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with a recently-released iOS version and potentially more to come.
