In an unlikely licensing twist, eighties synth-pop survivors Depeche Mode are collaborating with Valve on Left 4 Dead 2.

Kotaku asked Valve's Chet Faliszek about it after spotting that new character Rochelle was wearing a Depeche Mode t-shirt.

Faliszek explained that Valve had contacted several bands and record labels with a view to referencing them in its co-op survival horror sequel, and that Depeche Mode had been "very free" with letting the developer use its likeness, audio recordings and t-shirts in the game.

There's no word on whether the collaboration will extend beyond a bit of retro fashion, although we do find the idea of slaughtering Infected in the streets of New Orleans to the sound of Personal Jesus strangely compelling.

Left 4 Dead 2 is out on 17th November for Xbox 360 and PC.
