Beenox gets keys to Spider-Man franchise

Acti: studio has "reinvigorated" series.

Activision has handed Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions developer Beenox the reins to Marvel's franchise, confirming it will be working on further games starring the crime-fighting web-slinger.

Activision VP Patrick Kelly explained, "Beenox's creative vision reinvigorated the Spider-Man gaming experience among critics and fans in Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions. We can't wait to see where this talented studio will take this franchise in the future."

Marvel boss Todd Jefferson joined in the back-slapping, insisting, "Beenox has done a tremendous job showcasing the essence of Spider-Man while pushing new creative boundaries with Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions."

The pair aren't far wrong. Shattered Dimensions was a definite step up for the series, winning a mildly heroic 7/10 from Eurogamer's Christian Donlan last year. Its predecessor, the Treyarch-developed Web of Shadows managed 5/10 in 2008, whereas Next Level Games' limp Friend of Foe scored 3/10 in 2007.

There's no word just yet on where Beenox plan to take the franchise next, but studio boss Dee Brown promised it was looking to top its debut outing.

"We are thrilled with this opportunity to continue our close, collaborative relationship with Activision, Marvel and everyone's friendly, neighborhood hero, Spider-Man. Being able to map out Spider-Man's interactive future gives us the creative freedom to really craft the best gaming experience for the fans."
