Awesomenauts announced for PSN, XBLA

Swords & Soldiers dev returns.

The studio behind ace WiiWare/PSN side-scrolling RTS Swords & Soldiers has announced its next project – 2D multiplayer brawler Awesomenauts.

Due on PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade on an as yet undetermined date, Dutch developer Ronimo Games is dubbing it a "Mulitplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) game inspired by your favourite '80s animated series."

Judging by the screenshots below, it's a side-scroller in which you pick from a line-up of OTT mercenaries and duke it out with other players online.

"We are thrilled to surprise the world with Awesomenauts at E3, and look forward to announcing further details then. If MOBA games and classic animated series were to have a baby, this would be it!", commented Ronimo co-founder Jasper Koning. "They don't make 'em like this anymore!"

Ronimo's last effort, the aforementioned Swords & Soldiers launched on WiiWare back in 2009, with a PlayStation Network version following on in 2010.

"In bite-sized chunks Swords & Soldier is a riotous experience, bursting with the kind of visual character and creativity that typifies Behemoth's Castle Crashers on Xbox Live Arcade, while offering a rare sort of mechanical polish," wrote Eurogamer's Simon Parkin in his 8/10 review.
