Twinleaf Town and Route 201 Pokémon, trainers and items in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

Our in-progress guide to Pokémon BDSP's trainers, items, and wild Pokémon.

Twinleaf Town and Route 1 are the locations of your very first steps in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, marking the very beginning of your adventure.

Below we'll take you through all the key details for the locations, including any Pokémon encounters, trainers, and items that might be available, plus a walkthrough of your key objectives and anything else you'll need to know.

Twinleaf Town Pokémon, trainers and items

After choosing your appearance, your name, and the name of your rival (officially named Barry), it's time to start the game itself.

You'll begin in your bedroom, watching something dramatic on TV. Head downstairs and talk to you Mum, who warns you about straying into long grass when you don't have any Pokémon. As you head outside, Barry will appear - he's an impatient chap, Barry, so impatient that he's already forgotten something back at his house.

Head to Barry's house and go upstairs and talk to him, then head north onto Route 201, then west and up into Verity Lakefront.

At Lake Verity, you'll encounter two people: Professor Rowan, and another character who's with them, either Lucas or Dawn (the opposite to the gender you chose for your own character).

They'll run off and leave something there - a briefcase, which you go to give back to them before being attacked by a Pokémon in the wild grass. This is your time to pick a starter, to help you out here but also stay with you for the rest of the game, so choose wisely!

Available Pokémon

Pokémon Availability
Turtwig (grass) / Chimchar (fire) / Piplup (water) Gift

Note that these starters' final evolutions are duel typed. So Turtwig's final evolution is Torterra, which is Grass and Ground-type. Chimchar's is Infernape, which is Fire and Fighting. Piplup's is Empoleon, which is Water and Steel. For more help deciding, see our dedicated guide to Pokémon Diamond and Pearl Starters!

Trainers and Opponents

Trainers Pokémon Level
Wild Starly Starly Lv.2

Defeat the wild Starly, and then head back home via Route 201 again! On the way back to your home you'll run into the Professor and Lucas/Dawn again, and you're told to meet them at the Professor's lab, which is in Sandgem Town.

Before that, go back home to your Mum and talk to her, and she'll give you a pair of Running Shoes, which allows you to run faster (automatically by moving with the analog stick, or by holding down B while using the D-pad).

Items Location
Running Shoes From your Mum at home after returning with your starter Pokémon

Chat to everyone else in town if you like, and then it's time to finally set off, via Route 201 again but this time heading east!

Route 201 Pokémon, trainers and items

Route 1 is very short and simple - collect some Potions from the Poké Mart lady in the north of the long grass and then go straight to Sandgem Town nearby to the east.

Available Pokémon

Pokémon Availability
Starley Grass
Bidoof Grass

Items Location
Potions x10 From Poké Mart lady in long grass

And that's it! Head to Sandgem Town and Route 202 to the east!
