Alone in the Dark: Illumination beta begins this week

But you have to pre-order from Steam to play.

Atari (remember them?) is making a new Alone in the Dark game for PC, and it's got a beta.

Alone in the Dark: Illumination holds a beta period from 29th January, but you can only get in on it if you pre-order the game on Steam.

Illumination, the next entry in the long-running survival horror series, is set in Lorwich, Virginia. You have to fight eldritch nightmares while lighting up maps to create safe zones to damage enemies.

As well as single-player, there's a co-op multiplayer portion that lets you choose from four characters: the Hunter, the Witch, the Priest and the Engineer. You can level up each character's skills.

Apparently there will be one additional beta period before the game launches proper in the spring for £22.99.

The Alone in the Dark series has been dormant since the 2008 release of Eden Games' effort. Should we expect a return to form with Illumination? It's being made by a new developer called Pure FPS, which is also working on Nether and Nether: Arena, according to Atari. The team is made up of the founding members of Rekoil developer Plastic Piranha.
