Aliens: Fireteam is a co-op third-person shooter out summer 2021

Affirmative.

There's a new Aliens game on the way.

Aliens: Fireteam is a co-op third-person shooter due out summer 2021 on PC via Steam, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and Xbox One.

The gameplay trailer is below (it looks a bit like Gears of War meets Aliens to me):

Aliens: Fireteam is set 23 years after the original Alien trilogy. You play a Colonial Marine on the USS Endeavor, which was recently tasked with answering a distress call from the outer colonies. There are four campaigns you can play with two friends or AI teammates.

As for enemies, expect to face Xenomorphs and Weyland-Yutani Synthetics. There are five character classes, customisable weapons and mods, character progression and the ability to mutate each mission via a Challenge Card system.

Developer Cold Iron Studios was established in 2015 by the creators of MMOs City of Heroes, Star Trek Online and Neverwinter at Cryptic Studios. It's been around the houses a bit. In January 2018, Cold Iron Studios was bought by FoxNext Games, the interactive arm of entertainment giant 20th Century Fox, and set to work on this new Alien shooter. In March 2019, Disney bought FoxNext Games as part of its $71bn acquisition of Fox.

Then, in January 2020, Scopely, the mobile gaming specialist behind Star Trek: Fleet Command, bought FoxNext Games from Disney and picked up Cold Iron Studios in the process. At the time, Scopely said Cold Iron Studios would be put up for sale in order for the company to find a more appropriate home for the Alien shooter.

In August 2020, PlanetSide 2 developer Daybreak bought the studio for an undisclosed fee. Then, in December 2020, Cold Iron Studios changed hands again after Enad Global 7 (EG7) bought Daybreak for $300m. Phew!

"With Aliens: Fireteam, you and your friends will experience stepping into the boots of a squad of hardened Colonial Marines fighting in the ultimate battle for survival," said Cold Iron Studios boss Craig Zinkievich.

"This is the action game Aliens fans have been waiting for - hordes of different Xenomorphs swarming over ceilings and across walls, surrounding your team and striking from every angle. Work together, customize your character, utilise tons of weapons and gear and... well, you just might get your fireteam out alive."
